Okay-- This thing is almost finished. Another week and we'll have this in rubber. You might notice how the doors and windows are sealed up. This is so we get a clean surface in the mold so when we go to open these spaces up we won't have any problems.

You might also notice we have crappy lighting in the shop, so please bear with these shots. The model is in the final phase of being detailed. The plating was finished and then primered. After that, zillions of little pieces of striping tape were applied and then primer was sprayed over the entire thing again.

After the primer had cured, we pulled off the tape. The result is very subtle panel depressions in the surface. Now we are doing the opposite. All the little white and silver things you see in these shots will remain on the model after the final coat of primer.

One thing we discovered while staring at the reference photos for the hundred-thousandth time was that a lot of detail that looks dimensional on the filming model is really just paint. We made the decision to go beyond that bit of trickery and actually make those details. One of them can be seen above the center door, in the upper left part of that door panel. It is a small 'L' shape. This was just painted in on the original, but gave the illusion of being dimensional, as we have done here.

If you are wondering how big this thing is, the door openings are 3.5 inches in diameter. The next time you see this, the entire ball will have been detailed. This will include the various 'sensors' that dot the surface and the Emergency Airlock Door.

The door was finished just today. I don't have the parts aligned quite right in this photo, but you get the idea. The doorframe will be an integral part of the sphere, but the door will be cast as a separate item. This leaves us with the option of doing the interior of the Airlock.

I'm not going to have more photos for at least a week. I should have more of the construction of the Pod, though, so keep checking there for more information.
