Hey gang,

I had a quick question. I have been searching actually for quite some time for a very high quality model of the Discovery from 2001. I dont want anything HUGE, just something that will look great with my Star Trek models. I have the superb quality Bandai models of the 1701 A and 1701 E Enterprise and thought that a really nice Discovery would look beautiful beside them!

I am a HUGE fan of the 2001, 2010, and the 3001 books! The movies are fun for the model work too. Also, I am a FANATIC about the Disney movie The Black Hole, for the models rather than the plot! LOL

And I am researching the USS Palomino ship from The Black Hole to custom build a Studio Scale replica of the Palomino for myself. I am using the great Kubrick toy version of the V.I.N.CENT robot with the model so it should be a FUN project! For anyone who enjoys the Black Hole movie models! I dont know of anyone who has ever made a custom version of the Palomino from the Black Hole, so I am (Hopefully) the first to tackle it! Just wish I had better photos of the models and the ship!

Anyway, I was also hoping to find a really great, highly detailed version of the Discovery for my collection. Could you guys let me know WHERE to look to purchase one, and what compaines they are made by. Just ANY pieces of information would help.

When you say you "dont want anything HUGE", what do you mean? Is that something in the 1 foot long rage, or larger?

Checkout this thread from the Starship Modeller forums for a planned 1/72 Discovery resin kit. This is still a big model at approximately 1.4 m long. The only thing smaller is the Lunar Models 1/132 Discovery resin kit for $165.95. This is 0.76 m long. However, this is not an easy kit to put together. See this buildup review at Starship Modeller.

I'm assuming that the length of Discovery is 100.58 m (based on the 55 foot studio model being 1/6 in scale).

Thanks for the information. The deal is, I would LOVE to have one of the 1/72 scale Discovery models. But really, I dont have that kind of money right now. (We just had our first baby girl!)

I guess the Lunar Models version will have to do. It just isn't quite as detailed as I would like, and it looks like it requires a LOT of extra work. Being more of a novice model maker, I LOVE the Bandai versions of the Star Trek models! LOL All the painting and lighting done for you, just put it together! LOL PERFECT for guys like me! hahaha

Anyway, I was just hoping there might be something better out there.

Is there ANY idea how much the 1/72 scale Discovery will cost? There has to be an idea. Are we talking 400$, or 800$......or more?

And is at buy as you come, or maybe like some other custom models in progress, where you put down your deposit and pay from there!?

I am putting the kit together right now for shipping and writing up the instruction sheet for TimeSlip Creations where it will be cast.

A styrene version of the Discovery was something I mentioned years ago. At the time I was starting the styrene Mercury kit. That kit went way wrong financially (and there is no short version of that long story...) and I'm still suffering from it. So, there will be no further styrene kits. Only resin.

The Discovery kit (emphasis on 'kit') will be 44-inches long, which was the size it would have been if it was done in styrene. I'd like to say I'll have the kit out by summer, but instead I'll just say when its ready, you'll know it. Until then, there's no use asking. If you don't seen any news about it here, there's no news to share.

Hi all and StevenPietrobon,

To me, the Lunar Models Discovery can't be scaled as it cames from the box because the intercalated parts (tubes for the spine) are wrong in lengh, making the vessel smaller than it would be in reality. As the diameter of the CM is about 88mm, and the estimate of 10m for real, the scale is about 1/110, not 1/132.
This Discovery is based on the drawings of Shane Johnson (that are mostly influenced by the 2010 Discovery), especially the collar who is smaller than it should be.

Thanks for your reply TMA1. The 1/6 Discovery had a 6' diameter CM and was 54' or 55' in length (according to Scott's sources). This gives a "real" CM diameter of 36' or 11.0 m and a length of 324' or 330' (98.8 or 100.6 m). Thus an 88 mm diameter CM would scale out to 1/125 (6x6x0.3048/0.088) and 0.76 length would scale out to 1/130 or 1/132 (6x54x0.3048/0.76 or 6x55x0.3048/0.76). Thus an "average" scale would be about 1/128.

Concerning the Lunar Models Discovery, I had found the same scale than you, some 1/125. But with the "new" ratio (a CM being 10 m), the scale has increased to about 1/110. What is sure is that the model from the box is too short !

Concerning the Time slip Creations, it seams that the 1/118 scale as seen on the Starshipmodeler site is wrong. If the length of 137 cm is correct, the model should be at near 1/72 scale (accepting the "true" 100 m for real), and about 1/65 (to really turn in round !) if 90 m long. 1/118 scale states for a Discovery more than 160 m long ! We are most of us quite sure that this length is totaly wrong now.

TMA1, I agree with you about the Time slip Creations Discovery. This was made at 1/72 scale based on a 54' Discovery at 1/6 scale. Scott is also using this for his future 44" Discovery, which will be at 1/87 (HO) scale. To be precise, a 1/87 Discovery should be 1.135 m (44.7").

Could you please let me know how you get the "new" ratio and a CM diamater of 10 m?

This is why I hate to put a scale on any FICTIONAL object. The Discovery that I sell is proportionally correct, period. It represents the "model" used in the movie with the best available resources. Arguing about a non-real object is moot. Just enjoy the kits made for what they are. If this was a REAL airplane or car kit, than scale becomes more of an issue.

I didn't want to wound you about the wrong scale of your SPLENDID Discovery. I agree about your attitude to don't put any scale to fictional obbjects, but this topic is to determine what would be the "real" length of this majesty, and try to determine scales of those reproductions we have in the market. It is always interesting to put aside models, fictional or not, that are same scale to compare sizes. Only, there is sclare on Starship Builder to polemize with ! Only that. Whatever the scale, your Discovery remains one of most beautiful kit, not to say the ONLY, on the market. It is a pleasure for modelers to put hands on those productions. Thank you for your serious work.

Hi JM, thanks for your comments. I understand completely the need for a uniform "fleet" when doing say Star Fleet. But, I see more often than not the insane drive to nit pick scale over a subject rather than just enjoying the subject. The Discovery I've found seems to have a few mysteries about it's size. Someone says this, someone says that.
Oh, well back to building. Less than two weeks to go and I still have to paint up my Discovery!!

Obviously, there are many questions about the Discovery that will probably never be definativley answered, sadly. This does, however, allow for a fair amount interpretation and creativity.

Without a doubt, George's kit is gorgeous! It looks right so it is right(ancient IPMS saying)! Whether it's 1/72, 1/74.23 or whatever is unimportant. I just wish I had been able to see it in person a couple months ago at the IPMS/Techmages meeting. (Of course I missing THAT meeting!)

Finally a request.
On the topic of the of Discovery, does any have closeup detail pictures of the module couplers? I think the Spaceship Handbook drawings aren't quite right, but I don't have a clear, side on picture to confirm. Scott, George, do either of you have such shots of your models?

This subject has been done to death on several threads in this forum. When I started doing this kit years ago I only had few accurate referances to work from.

The main one was the 9:1 ratio of command sphere to length and the length of the studio model which varied from 54 to 55 feet according to which book I used.

When it came time to place the emergency airlock hatch and pod doors on the sphere is when I discovered that it wasn't a scale 36' in diameter like I first assumed. To get a closer approximation of the movie version I decided I would either need a scale 40' sphere or smaller pod doors and hatches.

The larger sphere was out of the question and remaking the openings would've set me back several months at least so I decided to bite the bullet and go with what I had.

I have never claimed that my kit is 100% accurate since the majority of the kit is based on the T.L.A.R. method of modeling ( that looks about right), only that it is one of the most accurate and detailed kits made so far.

Also I'd like to point out that comparing my Discovery to Scott's is like comparing a Toyota to a Rolls Royce. While Toyota sells thousands of its cars for every one Rolls sells, that doesn't take away from the market for their cars. Scott had access to stuff I would've killed for to get detailed parts and stuff. Almost everything I did was by hand over 7 years of effort.
