I gotta say... you're more into this kit than I would be.
Nice work there! |

Nice work you are doing. It appears how you have corrected that little issue seems to work very well!

Those aluminum strips are beautiful there! When/if I get my second one, I will use your notes to build it!

Thank you both for your encouragement.
There are only a few things left that I want to change before I'm ready to glue everything together and get it painted. I've just about decided, after enlarging the 'bulb', that I need to lower the sensor hole in the front about 1/8" or so. The hole should be closer to the bottom of the bulb than it is now, similar to the way it was before. I'm not sure yet just exactly how I'm going to go about doing that, but it seems to me that it needs to be done anyway. Once I do that, I'll be able to install the sensor equipment inside the hole, which I now have an idea of how it's supposed to look. The final change (I hope) is that of the vents, or ribs, on the pylons, just above the nacelles. I've seen another modeler's modification of this area and it looks fantastic. I'm still not 100% sure if I'm going to tackle this area, but it will make the model look much better, so I'm planning on this for now. Unfortunately, vacation time is about to begin for me, so the modeling will be put on hold for a while, probably about a month or so. It's kind of frustrating to put this project on hold for so long just so I can go out and have a good time doing something else. --------------- |

So you're going to tackle the re-positioning of the sensor hole after all that agonizing!
As for the vents on the pylons... not familiar with that. |

Thank you for the compliment, but there are several important things to consider: First, I have to actually finish modifying the 'bulb' and get it looking right before I could possibly consider such a thing. This is still a WIP. Second, I have never made molds or cast parts before, so don't really know how much work or expense is involved in such an undertaking. However, since I'm interested in lightening up the front end of my model a bit, I've already contacted someone who is very good at that sort of thing to see what it would cost for me to have my bulb cast, and recreated in fiberglass. As expected, the cost would be very high for a single copy. Third... IF I decide to have mine cast and a fiberglass copy made, and IF the person doing it is willing to make more than just one, I have no idea what the cost per item would be. I have no idea what "reasonable" is, or how many people would be interested in paying a "reasonable" amount for a fiberglass replacement 'bulb', so it's not really possible for me to say right now if this is feasible or not. At this point in time, I think it's probably not going to be. ---------------

I'm back home for a few days between vacations, so decided to work on repositioning the sensor hole in the front of the D-7's 'bulb'. Since the hole is about 5/8" in diameter, I decided to use a Dremel drum sander to enlarge the opening vertically, making it about 1/8" or so 'taller' by carefully working the sander towards the bottom of the bulb. When the bottom of the opening was low enough, I epoxied in a 21/32" brass tube, and filled in around it with Apoxie Sculpt. Then it was cutting, filing, and sanding. Lots of filing and sanding. I still have a few rough spots to touch up, and the detailing inside the hole to do, but here are a few before and after pictures.

I've been on vacation off and on for the past month, so haven't been able to get hardly any work done on my D7, but I did manage to get one small
detail finished: the sensor/deflector detail inside the hole in the front of the bulb.
I've seen some photos showing this area of the original filming model, and recreated it the best I could. I think it came out pretty close. Here are a few photos showing it from some different angles.
After a bit more sanding, and a final primer coat, this part of the model will be ready for paint. It's going to be a busy summer for me, but I hope to finally get this model finished one day soon. --------------- |

Nice touch on this detail!!
I was unaware that there are any shots of detail in this area. Maybe you can post them?

Thanks for the link. Not sure if they are using artistic license there... but Ok, I'll go for it.
Still.... you are doing great there Scott! |

I just came across Jim Keys kit the other day (no price given). He says his build is made from scans off the original. But when those scans were made would be
critical, considering the roller coaster ride the original went through over the last 40 years. And whether someone along the way would have added such details
is another question. Until Jim releases his master references (or someone asks him), we shall not know.
I am ever impressed with your meticulous eye, Scotthm!
Best Regards,

Gary Kerr went out to Ed Miarecki's shop in 1991, when the Tholian ship, D-7, and Enterprise were there. He video taped the models while there, and recently e-mailed me a couple of screen captures from his video of the D-7. These pictures reveal detail on the model I'd never seen before, and I'm very appreciative of them.
