OK-I must be blind:having viewed 2001 about (x exp n) times,I only noticed last week in the good old UK BBC 'Radio Times'-it had a still in its
featured movie page-theres a ladder running along the spares corridor floor in the pod bay.
Ive seen so many publicity images showing Poole striding in a very 1G pose direct on the floor (which also has storage bays for AE35s etc) that I never noticed the real footage shows Bowman throwing his mass on the rungs of a ladder strung along the floor.
So-can you all out there answer me:
1)was the ladder added because the set (presumably built of flimsy vacformed plastic or wood) couldnt take the 1G actor weight
2)Did Ordway realise the 'real thing' would also be flimsy- weve all seen how strong airliner partitions and carry-on luggage doors are.And gotta save mass-it all needs to be in the sphere hull for radiation shielding when they get to Jupiter.OK, Zero G means the crew weight is not an issue but the inertia is if Bowman or Poole braced themselves against the floor-and those 'Grip-Sole' boots might lift a lid accidentally when they step off.Funny-I always assumed the black strips on the dooors were Velcro...
3)Anyway...the ladder is in the film.. anyone know the width and rung spacing
4)Most importantly... Scott, are those of us getting any kind of model with the pod bay interior getting the ladder as well or should we start searching the photoetch aircraft part aftermarket?..
