Life Magazine has made some of its photo library available on Google. Start a Google Image search, type in "kubrick source:life" for the search argument, then click "Search Images". There are many interesting photos taken in Equipment Bay and the Centrifuge, as well as a shot on the Discovery bridge showing the doorway in the ceiling behind the command couches. Neat stuff.

Try searching on "space odyssey source:life" in Google Images. Some of the images have different (better) color saturation and balance. Finally... a nice look at the other end of the equipment bay, the mockup pod with uplight (and no chair!), new centrifuge details, close-up suit details, complete with smeared LetraSet letters on the yellow front pack.

In a couple of the photos Dave and Frank are doing a pretty good job of holding their breath. At least two of the photos has them in the Pod Bay in their jumpsuits, but with one of the Pod Bay doors open!

Who would think we would get so many "new" photos from 2001 40 years later. One thing that I thought was sort of funny was that on first glance at the photos that had Poole and Bowman in the pod through the front pod window, where they are wearing the yellow and red suits without the helmets, for a moment, it really looked like a classic Star Trek shot of Kirk and Scotty! I know it sounds dumb, but that's what it sort of looks like until you see the larger shot. Michelle

Posts: 62 (11/26/08 23:13:36) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I have already noticed important details from 3 "Holy Grail" shots: Now there is a definitive account of excatly how many lines radiate out from the pod window and the thicknesss of the grooves. I had always estimated 101. Turns out to be 102. (ARGHHH!) The backwall in the Discovery spare equipment room has a slight bow to it which is the curvature of the Discovery CM ball! Amazing that they would even THINK of going that far when they built the set! The HAL testbench 's backwall has a dual slope to it (it's not vertical). Note the projector and mirror box behind the HAL testbench for the display screen. ...Correction...I went back to my 3 views from 1998 and I DID have it right at 102. (HOORAY!) In the Bowman-in-pod window shot. I thought that maybe it was due to warping in the window glass, but this pretty much synches it. Also note the different pack worn by Bowman on his way to disconnect HAL...look at the shot where you are looking up at Bowman just before he enters the Pod Bay Observation Room. The Recharge instructions are not centered properly. I can really relate, having done tons of Letraset work for aerospace industry graphics and using it in scale modeling (via the 3M INT process where you make your own rub-down type). It's a great process, but you quickly learn what NOT to do. And even then...s*** happens.

Posts: 5 (11/27/08 12:47:42) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I used a lot of press-on Letraset type doing advertising layout for student newspapers in high school and college... extremely labor-intensive work that is lost in this age of desktop publishing, so when I see a day's work smeared, it has a certain impact. I'm wondering if the damage occurred during the shooting of the airlock scene. Keir Dullea had mentioned that he was battered around quite a bit in this scene, which would never be done today due to liability concerns. The damage could also have occurred during the attempted rescue scene. The stunt double was really beat up when the Pod grappling arms bumped into him. You don't realize this when you're watching the picture, because the filming was overcranked four times in order to simulate weightlessness, but the actual impact was much more severe.

If NASA had hired the 2001 team, with Ordway and Lange at the top, they could have served as NASA's advanced R&D think tank, which would have been much less costly than an army of bureaucrats. They had all of the industry contacts in place, and a rational blueprint for getting a manned mission to Jupiter by 2001. We wouldn't have lost 20 years due to the defective Shuttle design. The blueprints hold up to this day, for the most part (sure, Kubrick nixed the radiator fins of Discovery for esthetic reasons, but I've always rationalized this away by thinking that they were retractible, since Discovery wasn't under power during the time of the events in the picture).

Even when the engines aren't running, the reactor(s) still provide energy for the ship, and so cooling is always necessary. As heavy as nuclear power/propulsion is, it is at least nice that the reactor part can do double duty. On another note, in the Life images of the pod bay with the projector mirror (or projector istelf) box behind the testbench display, the images were too contrasty for me to make it out originally, but even though the backwall of the testbench does have a slight slope to it, the majority of the slope in those images is due to the production crew having pulled the panel out to get inside the testbench. But because the length of all those wires was not long enough, they had to lean it against the back and prop it up on that box.
