I'm trying to work out what the waldo's actually look like. I did a quick rendering. Do they look like this? I did these based on several images from the DVD and what was worked out by Dennis at 2001spacesuit.com.

Looks good to me....but I am not the POD expert.
I have looked over sum screen grabs and it seems to me that there is a pre formed recessed area for the drivers knuckes? I just glued the two rear entry walls in place with some the rear panels...arter that its just a few more panels, the padding ....it's getting there! If you can't dazzle them with your paint job baffle then with interior details!

Looks good - but it's upside down. The connector attaching it to the consoles should be on the opposite side. Check out pod.paragrafix.com/images...t_plus.jpg
Zoom in on the image and check out the right-hand controller. I'd be willing to bet that Dennis has shots that I've never even heard rumors of, so I'd guess that his layout and proportions are petty durned good. These are the last interior pieces I still have to create and am still working on my own designs, but yours look pretty spot on - other than the upside down part ;-) |

Scratch the upside down comment. Looked over the image some more and realized that the controller's been rotated (which you can see Dave doing when he gets back into the ship). Sorry for the confusion.

Jim,
Is this kind of what you meant? ![]() Thanks for the great investigation and design work - made building my little guys MUCH easier! I tossed my original Waldos as they were totally wrong. P.S. I left the little nubbin on the top long so I had something to hold while gluing bits together. P.P.S. This is my first test with the portable photobooth my daughter gave me for Christmas - works great! Thanks Melissa! |

Sweet work, Paulbo!
But what is a "portable photobooth"? :-) |

Thanks guys! It's getting there slowly but surely ... and of course starting next month I have to clear out my work area as it's being remodeled as my office so I won't have anywhere to work 'til it's done and I move my modeling stuff into what's currently my office.
The photobooth's a slick little lighting station. Very easy to setup and use. It comes with a reversible blue / gray backdrop, though I'm going to hit the local fabric store and see if they have flocking material in other shades as well. (Flocking's like velvet, only with much smaller "fuzz" and doesn't have stark shadowing." |

Those waldos are stunning! And those photo boxes are nice too, eh?
If you want to change your backgrounds later, see if the fabric store has any neons, like green, blue or orange . You could work with basic black or white, but it's much more primitive and inaccurate a technique that way (especially with a white and black pod!) Of course, if you want proper 'product shot' imagery, black and white is the only way to go. Typically, you swap out your BG color for whichever color is not in your subject. You don't want to use a blue screen if your subject is wearing blue jeans fighting the Cookie Monster, for example. You want green or orange in that case. As neons are unnatural, they simply make it that much easier. (Technically, you'd be looking for Chroma Blue or Chroma Green (paint=$50+/gallon!) So, this will allow you to easily pull a key (magic wand/color range) and add a background of your choice later. There are additional tricks to lighting the green separate from the subject, but for this level of work, you should have few problems. You will also have to deal with color spill (light bounced back onto the subject from the walls), but that is easy enough with the Hue/Sat controls in PShop. Art stores (even your local grocery store in the kid's supplies/art section) have 2x3 foot sheets of neon green as well. You get some sheen off them, but that happens with fabric as well. And if you want to take a video of your model and composite in a moving background later (AfterEffects, Combustion, etc), simply put regularly spaced, little dots of the contrasting color on the walls and you can use them as tracking markers! (Green gets red dots, blue gets orange, etc) Best Regards,

Hi Manfred,
Well, they won't be up for sale ... though whilst cleaning up my modeling area in prep for the office remodel I found the sketches I made for the hand controllers. I'll scan them up and get them online soon. I also found the sketches for the greeblies on the wall and will get them up too. |

Well, I guess if you're not up to it.....
Sorry, poor attempt at reverse psychology. The sketches would be very much apreciated. |

Hey Jim,
Thanks for the drawings! I noted this on the thread it's in, but again here: This image of the Aries cockpit plans shows the same hand controller. Though it's not terribly detailed, it might be useful for helping refine the layout. ![]() Cheers, Paul |
