Here are two questions that have bugged me for some years, in the film:
1: What do the Russian scientists mumble after Floyd walks off? 2: What are the missing words that Dave and Frank say in the EVAP as HAL eavesdropped on them? Actual words or paraphrased is cool. Thanks! |

After reading your post I did what you may have already done? I turned on 'subtitles' and the RESULTS were:
1. What ever the Russians say after Dr. Floyd walked away was not important enough to translate from the script to the DVD....I would imagin its political based or something in that area of thought. 2. Same goes for what they say when we get Hal's view of thier lips...The audience gets the idea of what they are talking about anyways. Iether way....it is up to the viewers imaginantion and it does not effect of the story line. If anyone does know what the russians say that would be interesting. If you can't dazzle them with your paint job baffle then with interior details!

THE RUSSIANS EXCHANGE A FEW SERIOUS PARA- GRAPHES IN RUSSIAN I thought I saw a translation of the Russian conversation, but I can't remember where. Using Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Sound Recorder I recorded what the Russians say. In Edit -> Audio Properties -> Sound recording -> Volume... -> Select Stereo Mixer (Options -> Properties -> Recording -> Check Sound Mixer -> OK). Adjust the volume in Stereo Mixer to a high level and click on the Select box. Play and your DVD (I set this on loop from the start and end of the conversion) and record! www.sworld.com.au/2001.wav I will ask a Russian colleague to translate this for me. Steven Pietrobon

I sent the wave link to a Russian friend and he said it was too short and not clear enough to make anything out.
If you can't dazzle them with your paint job baffle then with interior details!

My Russian colleague gave this translation.
It goes something like "it looks like (I guess) they are having a very hard time", then I could not understand, then the last female says "yes, very (hard time)". Steven Pietrobon

Thanks! That's a cool little piece of trivia there. I had thought Dr. Smyslov was actually kgb and perhaps commenting on the veracity of Floyd's statements -or perhaps something more politically nefarious.

I did come across a Kubrick site the other day that had two variants of Smyslov's parting comment.
One was along the lines of: 'They're in big trouble', as suggested by another post here. The other translation came through 'a German knowing Russian and translating to English' as: 'They (He) know(s) more than they are (he is) saying...' Sometime, a fun little project would be to put my own translations over the english dialogue... Such as: Russian '...Be sure to bring that darling little child of yours with you.' Floyd: 'Well, we'll certainly try! It all depends on school vacations'... Translated as: 'Capitalist Pig, give us access to your family so that we may kidnap and hold them ransom for valuable state secrets!' 'Not a chance, Commie bastard! The day I let my child near you is the day I claw my own eyes out of my skull!' That kind of thing, though not those lines themselves...There's definitely an undercurrent going on to the whole scene. Try it yourself! It's fun!  Remember, the Cold War is still cooking in the background story! Everytime I watch the movie, better lines come to me. Once I actually write them down, that will be the beginning of the project. It also works in Floyd's speech to the board of scientists at Clavius and on the ride to TMA-1! Different theme, but still ominous with definite undertones! Have fun with it! |
