And is there a source for any research that may have already been compiled available that would help me establish certain know dimensions of the test bench and/or it's surroundings. I enjoy creating precise detailed computer models for a living and have always loved that test bench! Once completed, perhaps we could then talk to the Captain about creating a cast model of the bench at the same scale as the One Man Pods! That was about 2 years ago when I first asked that question. Since then I researched and had lots inspiration to keep going from Philster who sent a beautiful B&W image to me, DG27 who provided several nice detail close up shots, and the Captain who inspires us all with this web site. I thought I would try to re-post some of the images that were lost in the big EZboard Hacking of 2005. I wanted to be able to see the pencil concept drawings they were all proudly looking at and smiling. So with a little effort in Photoshop I was able to distort them back to normal. Wow the Pod Bay looks a little different! And where is that Test Bench?

Posts: 0 (11/21/05 06:13:59) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Terrific work, XRayDeltaOne, it can be seen that all the elements that eventually showed up on screen are there. Two things I note are that the proportions indicate something that's not quite the "stuffed into a spheroid" plan that we're used to. Also that it is huge compared to the more modest "three car garage" we all know and love. The Pod cradles, if they were separate from the spherical pod hulls, would indicate that the pods were originally supposed to be just spheres. Of course, now they are the nightmare collision of desktops, radial monstrosities and toilet seat shapes, all topped off with radiators. Fascinating and thanks for the posting. Eliot

I know your post is a year old, but I hope you pursue this project. Are all the standard Hal's the same size? If so, don't we know his faceplate dimensions? Perhaps you can post some shots mimicking the shots from the film. Place them side by side and have people critique them. Also, you could place some 3D characters roughly the size of Dullea and Lockwood in proximity to your test bench, or leaning over on it. Let people judge how good it matches the scale from the film. The man who has been researching and recreating/restoring the spacesuits found the source part of the AR-35 unit that was placed on the bench, perhaps you can get some photos and dimensions from him so than you can use it derive dimensions for the bench? In the absence of Capt. Cardboard making a model, you could do a breakdown of the bench's structure, as well as dimensions orthographic views, so people can make their own. I'm kind of interesting in recreating the top part of HAL's faceplate next to the monitor, in real size. Not planning on doing it any time soon, but it's something I've thought about.

It wasn't completely lost. The Internet Archive's Wayback Machine is a wonderful resource for recovering past material. They have "snapshots" of entire websites dating back to the mid '90s. Also, if you have Firefox, there is a search engine addon for the upper right of the browser. I love this thing.
