Over a long period of time, people have requested that I do the Command Module from the Big D as a kit. Over that same period of time I have said I would not do this as a kit, ever. Well...
Times change. The main reason for not doing this as a kit was the ball castings are very difficult items to make. But, it seems there are an ever-growing number of rotocasting services to take advantage of, taking the manufacture of these casting out of my hands. They are expensive, but I think not so expensive that the cost of a kit remains astronomical!
Another reason I've decided to do this is I am now actually finishing up the interiors for the Big D models. Big D owners know what this means, the rest of you don't need to be concerned about it.
Here-- have a look at what I've been doing...
In this first photo, you see a comparison of the Little D Pod Bay interior and the new one for the Big D. Those of you who are new to this should be aware one is twice the size of the other.
I've put in a measuring tape for size reference. This is not a small model!
Not having the ceiling in place, you don't have a sense of the space. I will have the ceiling done next week, as well as the floor, and I hope to have some shots of it sitting inside one of the balls. I'm having some test castings made and hope one will be on hand soon.
The kit will include the entire front of the ship: ball, collar and neck. How you decide to display this is up to you! It will have the complete Pod Bay and 3 pods, test bench and a reasonable representation of the flight deck. That means, the flight deck will look pretty good from the outside, but won't be an exact replica. The kit will not include any lighting materials, but lighting this thing should not be a problem! At almost 15 inches in diameter, there's plenty of room!
I'm only going to take pre-orders for 15 kits. The price will be $375, plus shipping-- and I don't know what that will be yet, though $30 is probably a good guess. If anyone wants to get on board with this now, I'll include the shipping. 5-2-08: See the ordering topic for information on development and production status of this kit, and potential release date.
