I believe that is due to the distortion produced by the widescreen lenses used on the camera. The original faceplate had threaded studs and butterfly nuts fitted to the back enabling it to be easily moved to the different sets.

My friend from the shop next door, Chris Ralfe, told me one day that there was a warehouse a couple of blocks away which was selling off old film props. We went there in our lunch hour and discovered that the place was chock full of wonderful stuff. Much of it was thrown into tea chests and there was also racks of clothing. After some rummaging I discovered the HAL faceplate in the bottom of one of the boxes. I immediately recognised it as I had see the film many times a few years earlier. Continuing to search I found the Brain Room key. I wish I had bought more of the props but these were the only ones I could recognise. Many years later, I contacted Arthur C Clarke who was delighted that I had written to him about the HAL 9000 artefacts. He said he would contact Stanley Kubrick to tell him. There is a chap in the States who has one of the helmets (red) and who has constructed a perfect replica suit to complete the outfit. Chris

Sorry! I do have a link the the 2001 Spacesuit site that has more information about the HAL faceplate and lens: http://www.2001spacesuit.com/HAL.html =================================================================== Curious about the placement of HAL's faceplate(s) in the movie, I watched it again last night and noted it in these locations: Frank's Pod (eye w/o faceplate) Flight Deck HAL's Brain Room Centrifuge Centrifuge Hub Pod Bay Test Bench Pod Bay Control Room (room with ladder) The only time you can see more than one HAL eye is in the Pod Bay, where there is the one on the Test Bench and at the same time you can see the red eye glow (but no full faceplate) through the Pod Bay Control Room window. The eye/faceplate in the Pod Bay Control Room looks very two dimentional to me, almost like it was a projection on a screen. I hope I didn't miss any, I should have written this up last night instead of waiting a day. I have seen the space suit website and, in fact, I dined with Dennis Gilliam, the creator of the site whilst he was in London last week! Fascinating guy! Posts: 37 (09/12/09 20:45:27) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Since Scott has indicated earlier in this thread he was not interested in producing a HAL 9000 faceplate, figured I'd mention Monsters In Motion is offering a 1:1 version by Ant Farm Studios. Just ordered one this evening for around $65 U.S. Looks like a decent offering if it ends up like the photo although I think the outer lens ring should be chrome or brushed aluminum. Will have to watch the film again for more in-depth analysis. What really caught my eye was the well done fisheye lens. If it turns out as good as the photo, I'll be happy. The painting part can be adjusted to personal preference. This all started out while searching for plans or a decent sized model of Nomad from Star Trek TOS, "The Changling". I've been wanting to build a 1:1 of that critter for a long while but could never find plans or a decent sized model to work with. Found an 8 inch tall specimen there also. Other things on the list, Gort & Klaatu in resin, and some other retro items I'll have to cut my food budget for. If the link below works, it should take you to HAL. Don't recall what was used in the prop (might have been mentioned earlier in this thread) but I check out surplus shed from time to time for something close to the 'blueprint'. Then again, one could probably find a glass blower that could create both the lens and outer protective cover for a reasonable price. Dean

If so, they could "easily" be made at a decent cost for a replica faceplate.

You could unscrew the filter and you'd end up with a nice ring. But I don't think they are a dead match for the 123 mm needed on that drawing. I've seen daylite filters at 112mm and 127mm. Might be worth rummaging around a flea market though. --Jim

The original lens is probably of "standard" lens diameter, therefore the ring would probably be accurately recreated with existing filter rings. Also, JWLaRue got me thinking that maybe off-the-shelf lens elements of the needed diameter might exist that although not shaped exactly like the HAL lens elements, might get very close to the look, when backlit.
