In my efforts to get the interior lighting figured out, I made some assumptions that led me to go with a technique similar to lighting a scene for a movie. The assumption was due to a failed attempt to use the lighting panels in the ceiling as the source of Pod Bay illumination. So, I was left to hide the lights in places that could not be seen through a single open door. This photo shows the Pods in place that will be seen through the open door on the left.
I've attached two LEDs to the 'off camera' side of the Pod Bay-- that is the side you can't see from the open door. These LEDs are aimed at the back wall and have been sanded with some 600 grit sandpaper to diffuse the light a bit.
When I saw how good this looked, I was fairly astounded. I made up a group of LEDs and put them in place with a piece of backlight film, in one of the ceiling panels. I was thinking this would fool the eye into thinking all the light in the room was coming from the ceiling panel. Well...
Seeing how good that small ceiling panel looked, I made up a group of LEDs to put in the long ceiling panel at the rear of the Pod Bay. It looked really good.
Then I became aware that the LEDs on the Pods were not on! The difference in this whole thing is that the diffusion is backlight film, instead of the paper I was using earlier. If you look 'up' as much as possible at these ceiling panels, you can see where each LED is hitting the backlight film. But, when viewing the scene straight on, straight through the open doorway, the ceiling panels are, more or less, edge-on to your point of view, so you don't notice these bright spots.
The end result of this discovery is that I'm finished trying to figure out what to do! And once all of the ceiling panels have LEDs behind them, the Pod Bay is going to look even better than what you see here. And because I know someone is going to see this and forget-- this is the Small Discovery model. The Big Discovery and CM Kits are going to look amazing!
I should make note of something with regard to these images. This is the first time I've shown images of the model with its own lighting. In the past, and you can go back and look at the other topics about this interior, the light has come from a big, 100 watt lamp shining light into the model from the outside. This is a significant step. The next time you see this interior, and it will be soon, everything will be in place-- the black floor panels, painted Pods, the finished Test Bench and the equipment bay. And, the finished Flight Deck. In other words-- The Little Discovery will be FINISHED!
