Since the last update, much progress has been made on the Flightdeck interior. Did I mention I really hate this thing? Just kidding...
Yes, those seats are a mini-nightmare in themselves. Not only are they a screwy shape, they are opposites! And they're padded! With tuck and roll
upholstery!
The doorway at the top is actually part of the set, but it was always out of frame in the film. There are a couple of publicity shots showing Gary Lockwood
standing there, with Keir Dullea back by the Brain Room.
Another shot of those (bleep)ing seats.
As if by magic, the rest of the walls have now appeared and a strange 'arch' sweeps from one side to the other. This is an alignment aid. It helps me
seat the flightdeck into the CM sphere properly.
You can also see a piece of cardboard attached to the upper edge of the flightdeck. This is a stand-in for a plastic bulkhead that will hold the flightdeck in
place when I've arrived at the final shape. In fact, this entire thing is a mock-up and will have to built again, to make the final masters that will go
into rubber.
Here we have the entire flightdeck assembly in place in the CM cross-section. Its a bit long and the final version will be shorter. I'll compress
something, leave something else out or sit down and cry. Well, maybe not the last one, but it'll wind up shorter when I'm done. And we're all
hoping that's sometime soon!
