In another thread, I had suggested that the reason why there were toggle switches in the pod, was maybe because of the bar in front of the switches being a "flip" bar to activate all the switches all at once, as is common in aerospace apps. But I think that a prior explanation by someone that it is just an unmoving switch guard is probably the truth instead. After going back to the bluray, it's pretty clear that Bowman's fingers fit between the bar and the toggle tips, so there is plenty of space between the tips and the bar. Also, because of the bluray quality, it is also obvious that the bar has no hinge...it just looks like a simple towel rack. Also, there are no flip bars for the toggles switches in the 2 circular panels on the forward walls...nor on the HAL test bench in the pod bay. So why the toggle switches?! I once thought that maybe it would make sense for tri-state toggle switches, but the pod's comm switches are clearly not tri-state. So I am all out of ideas. Ironically, if you look at the Apollo CM's Main Display Console, you have just the OPPOSITE! A zillion toggle switches, and just a smattering of lighted pushbutton switches (the eight launch vehicle switches with safety covers, and the Master Alarm silencer). (I'm not including the pushbuttons on the two DSKY computer control panels).
