Never Happy with the Lunar kit of the Ape and Monolith, I'm have this one sculpted for me to be available in kit form in early 2009. It's the classic
pose of the Moonwatcher, smashing the animal bones. There will be a monolith in the background of the piece as well (although I realize that isn't
"canon" I wanted it included.
Here's some pics of the piece so far:

Interesting conception of Moonwatcher. Is the artist using his "vision" for the sculpture or is the facial features stylized from something I am not
familiar with. Never the less, it look good so far. What is the scale of the sculpture?

Tagdot wrote:If you've seen the old lunar kit, the ape sculpture wasn't even remotely like what was depicted in the movie (no offense to the fans of that piece, it is a piece of garage kit history)...it looked like a weird, fat chimp, or a very stocky gorilla with a a face that was a cross of a chimp, and gorilla. But, to answer your question, it's a slightly stylized version of the ape. It's still a work in progress as well, there are going to be some mods to the face to get it closer to the film apes. The fur won't change that much though. Getting the "wispy" look of the ape fur in the movie, sculpted into 1/6 scale clay is not that easy....what you see is a bit of a compromise.

Excellent work chasd25..! I've done some sculpting myself and know how difficult that hair/fur thing is. Looking forward to seeing the progress of this
piece.

Getting closer. Figure is mostly done, base is about 90% there. Still some minor details (more bones on the base), and tweaks to do, and the monolith to add.

The piece is finished. Here's the final pics (a bit poor quality) with the complete base. Please note, the monolith in the pics is
strictly a stand in, and does not reflect the final size of the piece. It will be a machined acrylic (either black or clear) piece included with the kit.
