Have you all seen the studio scale
Moonbus, by Martin Bower? Apparently it was made back in 2007.
What do the experts think?

No Martin had just recently finished it. His article also says "that by the beginning of 2007, Keith & I had pretty much gathered together enough
material to begin to build a 3D model." Anyway his studio scale model is fantastic and no doubt will be used for reference by anyone interested in this
subject!

Martin does world -class model work. Check out his site. If he starts selling these, I bet he'll charge at least 5 Grand. Good thing us Yanks won't
have to pay VAT!

It's probably not all that important, but just to clarify things a little, Martin has actually made two Moonbus replicas to date. The first one was
completed around the beginning of May 2007, and the second one by the end of November 2007.
The photo journal is of the first model. Unfortunately, Martin didn't take any photos of the second one, which I feel was the better of the two.... He made a number of small modifications to the shape on the second Bus - most notably the position of the anti-glare section in front of the cockpit windows. It was sitting a bit high up on his first model, making the nose look a little too bulbous (one of these things that you only get to find out after building the model and comparing it to photos of the original). Lowering that section made quite a difference to the feel of the craft. The 'bridge of the nose' was also thickened up a touch for the second one, along with a few other minor modifications. If anyone is interested, here's a photo I took comparing the two on the bench, whilst I was visiting his workshop: http://i137.photobucket.c...hotos/MoonbusCompare.jpg Keith |

Thanks for the date clarification and comparision pics Keith. I didn't realize he had done this 2 years ago! Hopefully photos can be taken by whomever the
lucky owner of the 2nd model is to be shown to the rest of us.

Expect to pay closer to 15K for this beauty, though I don't know for sure.... Martin has done work for me in the past, and he is of course world class.
Among the best of the best. His high end models are about 20K.
If you order from Martin, I found that he goes over on time... but he does keep at it. He was many months late on my TB2, claiming health issues, which certainly may have been the reason. Sadly, his promise to send the model insured was not honored, nor did he pack it properly, so it was damaged by normal handling. I think he tries to pack well, but in my case, he failed... then the failure to insure as promised really soured the deal. But the work he does is very, very good. |

Yes, I think I would speak for all of us here that we would love to see any CGI renderings of the Moonbus. I am not sure about including photos here on this
site. Hopefully someone can fill you in on that. Is it just like including a photo in an email?

Very nice rendering. I'd love to see this added to the Orbital Defense Engineering Commission site.

I haven't decided yet but I am leaning in that direction. I just wish more people would give freely and not be so tight to the death with what they have. I
think its an honor for me that someone would use something that I created. Personally I think it is stupid for someone ( stanley kubrick ) to destroy movie
model props for selfish reasons, and Im not trying to be disrespectfull to him. What in the end do you really gain from keeping things all to yourself. Well if
I get more people to let me know that they would be interested in me releasing this well will see!!!!

What did you use to model/render your Moonbus with? I know there are a lot of folks in this group that use different modeling and rendering packages.

I used Rhino, its not as versatile as other modelers but in my opinion the easiest to use.

I started to model the Moonbus in Lightwave but got nowhere near as far as you. About the only thing I finished that I liked was the landing gear.

misterggg- I have a couple of nice photos of the Original Moonbus model used for filming if you are interested. I don't have time to upload due to a
family emerg. but feel free to leave an email address on the forum if you are comforatable with that. I also have pics of a small detail that Mr. Bower might
have left off his (fantastic) version of the Moonbus.

misterggg, that is a fine looking model. Must have taken quite some time to do. I have to agree with you about the selfish bit. The 2001 models belong in a
museum not in the garbage dump.

mknorr wrote:It took about 2 months of daily involvement to complete. 2 weeks alone of getting measurements for the rear bulkhead of which I am hearing now is still incorrect, but that is all part of the process. I dont have the physical model parts to work from (except the Honest John kit) only pictures from Martin Bowers website and kit scans where ever I can get them. Reference information is the key to any project of this type. So its back to the drawing board ( or CAD software). Oh I must say I have gotten recently more information and to everyone out there thank you! |
