For now, this image of the model made by Martin Bower will have to suffice. The model that is now coming from Atomic City is 42-inches long, 1:48 scale. I will have some photos of the masters very soon, probably no later than May 9 or 10. I have kept news of this model under wraps due to its long history of many people telling me they would bring it to completion. I can now say that is extremely close to being true-- that the model is days away from being finished.
I can now disclose that the person finishing the masters for me is Adam K. Johnson, the author of 2001: The Lost Sciences. He was also a contributor to the new Taschen books on 2001. You know, the book set that no one can afford!
Adam used tons of reference that has never been published to finish the Orion. He has been working on it since September, fitting it into his schedule whenever possible. I'd go on about how much of an expert he is on this particular subject, but none of that helps without actual photos.
Now, these shots don't do the model justice. The new photos will show the complete model, with the parts sitting in their proper locations. These are the only photos I have for now and were published in the Pre-Production forum back in February.
I expect to have the masters in my hands by the middle of this month and I already have the rubber on hand to make the molds. Adam has provided all the artwork for the decal sheet and Rick Sternbach is formatting that information so that I can have Microscale print them. My plan is to have the first 20 sets made using an ALPS printer so there is no delay due to the cost of what Microscale will charge. All kits after that will have the screen-printed version.
The backlog of orders for this kit is only 6 units, so when I start making them, there will be no delay for shipping. I am only going to sell kits AFTER I've made them, in batches of 10. I don't want anyone waiting more than 2 weeks to receive their kit.
The kit will feature interiors, though they will be very basic since none of the windows are large enough to see inside clearly. I know people will ask, so here it is: No Landing Gear. They were not seen in the film, so they won't be appearing in the kit. Perhaps an aftermarket person can do those (Paul?) I do need to see if I can devise a display stand, but I can't do that until I have a model it can hold, so let me say I want to do one, but as of this moment I don't know what form it would take.
As to price, it will finally depend on how much resin goes into one. I have an idea what that might be, so let me say the price will be comparable with the Big Aries, at $385.00. I really want to keep the price under $400.
If anyone wants to purchase one of these in advance, I'm up to doing that with 2 kits only, so I can use the money to pay for running the decals. I'll include the shipping in that price, but I have to emphasize I will only sell those 2 kits in advance of production. (Edit: NOW SOLD)
